When Canberra clash with Redland this Saturday afternoon new recruit Sam Burge will be playing his own game, the waiting game.
Burge, 19, a sculpted mid-sized midfielder recruited from Eastlake, caught the eye of Coach Kade Klemke in the AFL Canberra Competition last season. A season in which the Eastlake Junior finished third in the race for the Mulrooney Medal.
Fresh off his first pre-season with Canberra Burge says that despite the increased intensity pre-season has been a successful transitioning period.
"Being part of the Canberra Demons has been quite the step up from the Canberra competition, mainly in terms of the workload and professional environment.
But I’ll continue to learn and adjust to what is constantly expected of a Canberra Demons player.
Pre season has been a great experience, it was tough, but when you’re alongside a good bunch of blokes it's still fairly enjoyable.
I think we have gelled pretty well as a group over the summer which I think will become evident as the year progresses.
It's been unreal meeting everyone and I can't wait for what the season will bring.” Burge said.
Similar to so many other rookies Burge works diligently all week, trying to improve, hoping to impress the coaching staff, waiting for a chance to showcase his talent.
“As long as I’m playing some high quality footy at every opportunity, whether that's in the AFL Canberra competition for Eastlake or on the training paddock for Canberra I really want to continue to improve and develop my game and put my best foot forward for a game this season.” Burge said.
It requires patience, especially if you're in Burge's position. He is a hard-nosed midfielder on a team with a well established midfield, including the likes of Mitch Maguire, Jack Powell and Alex Smout.
Burge remains optimistic ahead of his rookie campaign and says he would be happy playing any role in 2018.
"Obviously I would love to get a game for Canberra but really I just enjoy whatever footy I'm playing.
If an opportunity presents itself then I’ll be ready to play my role for the team” Burge said.
Burge will join Eastlake in opening their 2018 AFL Canberra season this Saturday evening against Queanbeyan at Allinsure Park.
