To the Canberra Demons faithful,
Last year was a new chapter for the football club and myself as coach.
Gordon Hinckley once said “You cant build a great building on a weak foundation. You must have a solid foundation if you’re going to have a strong superstructure.”
For us to become a superstructure in the NEAFL we need to have a strong foundation.
This has been my primary focus since arriving at the club last year.
I want to build a culture that everyone feels comfortable in, a place that staff and players can trust and support, a foundation that will hold them up.
Football is more than winning games, It's about the development of people.
I'm extremely passionate about the importance of self development. Last year we focused a lot on leadership and getting the right people around club.
It wasn’t so much about finding who had the best qualifications but who had the best qualities and passion to lead this club as I believe quality people build quality outcomes.
So was last year a success? Yes. But is it where we want to be? No.
We still have a lot more improvement ahead of us as a footballing club and community.
I remember my first training with the squad last year, I couldn’t get a word out of the players, twelve months on and I can't get them to be quiet.
I have seen this group mature each training session and embrace our new players and staff.
This pre season has been one of the closest teams I’ve ever coached.
They care about each other, and what I witnessed at the pre-season camp is that these players are vulnerable with each other, they trust each other.
This will no doubt lead us in good steed for our 2018 NEAFL season.
So what do I expect for this season?
That's simple, growth.
I know a lot of the boys want to play finals this season and I believe we have the talent and ability to do so.
If we grow and mature from week to week, learn from our mistakes and don’t have a fear of failure we will make the finals this season.
So I encourage all our supporters, staff, committee, families and AFL Canberra clubs to EMBRACE us and we will EMBRACE you.
