Canberra Demons midfielder Mitch Maguire has recommitted to the club on a short-term deal which will see him remain a Demon until the end of 2019.
The 20-year-old joined the club from the Northern Jets in RFL (Riverina Football League) and has played 30 games since debuting against Redland in Round 1 of last season.
Maguire capped off an impressive debut season finishing 6th in Canberra’s Best and Fairest count and also claimed the clubs ‘Rising Star’ award.
In 2018, Maguire has upheld his reputation as one of the NEAFL’s leading inside midfielders while demonstrating leadership and maturity beyond his years.
“Shaun and the club have done everything right by me since I arrived last year, there’s a great bunch of people here which makes it a real family type environment” Maguire said.
“It’s (Canberra) is a great avenue for players who miss out on the (AFL) draft and still aspire to play at a high level.
“I’m super excited about what the future holds for this club and that’s why I signed so quickly and without hesitation.
“I feel that this year we can continue to push towards a finals campaign and have some really strong team success which is ultimately why you play the game.”
Canberra’s General Manager of Football, Shaun Young said he was delighted to have Maguire recommit.
“Mitch is a great player, a brilliant young leader, and a popular member of the Canberra community,” he said.
“We see his signing as a significant commitment to our football program and a belief in the direction the club is heading both short and long term.”
The boy nicknamed the ‘Mirrool Magician’ currently leads the NEAFL’s MVP voting and is a firm favourite for the NEAFL’s Rising Star award this season.
